Harddog M2 Sport Miata Rollbar
Miata Rollbar Intro and PHOTO Gallery
We get a lot of folks calling and asking for SOLO I bars despite not competing in SOLO I. Here is some general advice on rollbars and on the SOLO I bars in particular. We sell the good bars made by Autopower, Harddog, and Bossfrog….some are SOLO I rated, some are not. SOLO I bars are NOT always your best choice.
MYTH #1: You want a SOLO I Bar. Very often the first thing somebody says to me when they call about a Miata Rollbar is that they want a SOLO I bar. I usually ask them some questions and usually they quickly come to the conclusion that they thought they wanted a SOLO I bar but they really do NOT because they do not want the compromises that come with it. What do I mean by compromises? Stand next to your Miata with the top UP. Look at the curve of the rear roof line. Regardless of brand, all the Miata rollbar makers are stuck with that same curve if they want to make a bar that fits under the factory softtop. Therefore, the TALLER the bar, the more FORWARD the bar must be in the Miata if it is still going to fit under the Miata softtop! If you are tall, this means the taller SOLO I bars are going to be CLOSER to your head and limit the room for your head to move around in an accident. On the race track your head would have a helmet…but driving around town it would have, at most, the optional padding available with these bars. That’s something to think about. Thus, in a rear end accident in town with no helmet the SOLO I bar may actually be LESS safe because your head is more likely to hit it. Had plenty of friends with really good lumps on their heads and lucky to be alive.
Myth #2: You need a Solo I bar to autocross or attend track days. This is the companion myth to the one above. You do NOT need a rollbar for most Autocross classes….and very few tracks and track day hosts demand a solo I bar. Obviously, check with whatever organization you track with for local rules but I have yet to hear of any Miata owner getting turned away from standard lapping weekends with any of our four point Miata Rollbars. Most are looking to see a four point bar in your car and that is it. I did over 25,000 miles of track and autocross time in my 99 Miata with a basic Autopower “Street” Bar.
So, if you want a SOLO I bar, certainly we are happy to sell you one from each of the brands we carry but just be aware of the compromises and understand that it is not automatically your best choice because it meets the SOLO I regs…

BOSSFROG DOUBLE HOOP ROLLBARS for Miata
The Boss Frog Double Hoop Miata Rollbar is made of the highest quality 1-3/4″ x 1/8″ wall DOM tubing, with heavy 7 gauge laser cut flat parts. Each rollbar is manufactured in a precision welding fixture to assure the absolute best fit in your car. They utilize TIG welding for all tubing joints, to provide a higher strength but yet smaller weld joint, and the highest quality finished appearance. Why don’t their competitors use TIG welding? Because it is slower and more expensive to make.
One secret to the Boss Frog Double Hoop’s strength is the unique saddle, which straddles the Miata’s “hump”. In rollover testing per SCCA guidelines, the patent pending saddle design helped to distribute the load to the floor of the Miata. The vehicle frame bent in half from the pressure, but the rollbar was completely intact. Why buy a Boss Frog Double Hoop over other Miata rollbars? The only Miata rollbar to be physically tested for strength, isn’t that what you are buying it for? The only Miata rollbar with TIG welded joints allows a much smaller, yet stronger weld for the best possible finish. Best installation instructions available anywhere!
Retail FLAT RATE shipping of $65 within USA lower 48 states applies to these BossFrog rollbars and they ship factory direct to you. Although our store will charge some lower shipping amount we will correct the order to the flat rate of $65 because that is what we get charged too for the shipping on these.
BRIAN’S APPLICATION NOTES: The BossFrog Maxx design has a rake angle on the top portion which positions the hoops about 1-1/2 inches further rearward for increased headroom and recline angle. In order to fit under the top, the overall height of the Maxx design is about 1/2″ lower than the standard Boss Frog Double hoops. Because of this lower height, some customers will want the old style (standard) hoops, to get the tallest possible bar for track use and helmet clearance. Therefore, Boss Frog continues to offer both styles, the Maxx and the Standard and any customer wanting the old style can simply email us after submitting the order to ask that they be sent the “standard” instead of the Maxx design. This silver is a powder coat finish, not to be confused with the polished stainless steel that we also offer.
Available in SILVER, STAINLESS, or BLACK Finish.
The BossFrog Miata Roll Bars are available in three finishes; Black powdercoat – after manufacturing, the rollbars are shot-blasted to remove any mill scale from the steel, then they go through a 7-step cleaning process, then a 60% gloss powder is electrostatically applied and baked at over 400 degrees to get a hard durable finish. Polished Stainless – high quality 304 stainless tubing and flat parts are hand polished to a shiny finish. Unfinished – the color and finish of the rollbar is completely up to you.
Both BossFrog Clearviews and Double Hoops are made in MAXX and Standard Versions. The MAXX version leans back and give YOU a bit more space. Note our website says the MAXX version does not fit hardtops. In fact, the MAXX version was designed to fit the hardtop BUT because there is so much variation in how low the hardtops sit that sometimes the MAXX version clears and sometimes it won’t. Nonetheless, as a tall person I prefer the MAXX version of both BossFrog Designs because they are more out of my way in daily use of the Miata.
The construction of the BossFrog Miata Double Hoop Rollbar is very interesting, it arrives in THREE large pieces including a ‘saddle’ mount over the transmission tunnel. As you can see in the pictures below the result is triangulation of three connection points per side, six in total….and that means this is the best brace we can sell you for the middle to rear area of the Miata (far more effective than any relatively flat bracing you might bolt on below this area of the Miata).
BOSSFROG CLEARVIEW Miata RollBars
Available in MAXX and Standard Version. The MAXX version leans back a bit.
Boss Frog makes the ClearView double diagonal Single Hoop Miata roll bar, with spaced diagonals for an unobstructed view through the rearview mirror. Made of the highest quality 1-3/4″ x 1/8″ wall DOM tubing, with heavy 7 gauge laser cut flat parts.
One key to the Boss Frog Clearview’s strength is the rear brace foot. The foot is a formed triangle, which provides lateral support to the vertical hoop brace. Other manufacturers weld a flat plate on the brace tube, which gives no structural support at all to the brace. In rollover testing per SCCA guidelines, this rear brace foot helped support the vertical brace tube, passing the testing with almost no deflection. The installation instructions are also available on request.
